User Cynthia showed this wire cage - diy cage - play pen setup for her syrian girl "Krümel" on the German Hamsterforum (see original threads HERE and HERE). All pics courtsey of Cynthia; click to enlarge.
The wire cage has a floor space of 80cm x 50cm (~32in x 20in), the DIY cage has a floor space of 145cm x 60cm (~57in x 24in); in total: 1.27m² (roughly 2000square inches). The permanently set up play pen has a size of 2m x 2m=4m² (about 6.5ft x 6.5ft = 42.25square feet).
The front of the play pen (see pic 2) is made from wooden slats and plexi glass. On the right is a door for easy access by the owner.
DIY cage and wire cage are connected by a diy construction made from poplar plywood which goes from the back of the wire cage to an entrance hole on the back of the DIY cage (pics 3 & 4). Over here, plastic tubes are considered dangerous because they are often so small that a hamster can hurt it's cheek pouches when he squeezes through them with full pouches, therefore, most people don't like to use them and rather build their own connections from plywood. Pic 5 shows a diy "staircase" that connects the wire cage to the play pen. The hamster can choose on its own when to enter the pen or go back to the cages. The upper front of the staircase is covered with plexi glass so the hamster can't fall.
The play pen contains several boxes with digging materials (eg. corn cob granules as shown in pic 5, front left), homemade climbing toys and labyrinths made from poplar plywood, cardboard mailing tubes, cork tunnels, bendy willow bridges, a 31cm (12in) flying saucer wheel and several live plants: cat's grass, Calisia repens and spider plant (see pics 1 & 2).
The diy cage (pic 6) is 145cm x 60cm (~57in x 24in = 1368sq in) is made from laminated chipboard with a glass front and wire mesh lid. It contains a good 20cm (about 8in) of bedding, a 29cm (11in) Karlie Wonderland wooden wheel, a big sand box with chinchilla sand, a level ("race track") made from poplar plywood, several hideouts (bendy willow bridges, cork tunnels) and plants (cat's grass and spider plant).
The wire cage (pic 7) is 80cm x 50cm (~32in x 20in = 640sq in) has three storeys with lots of bendy willow bridge and wooden ramps, cork tunnels, two wooden houses and a candy jar for digging.
Syrian hamster girl "Krümel" really likes her home (pic 8).
This home must be one of the most well thought out one I have seen. Every detail is considered so carefully to ensure a happy hamster! It is amazing.
