Mike (User Xingtao from the German Hamsterforum) built this beautiful DIY cage for his winter white dwarf hamster Mickey. The cage has 4 themed areas with a combined total floor space of 1.34m² (over 2000square inches / 14 feet square). The sideboard carrying the cage measures 120cm x 55cm (~47" x 22"). The cage was built onto and into the sideboard and is made from veneered particle board. Note that in the EU, particle board is typically ultra low emission for formaldehyde and therefore safe for pets. In addition, all cut/raw edges were sealed and corners that might be bitten by the hamster were reinforced with aluminum angles (L-shaped aluminum strips). The doors and the left side wall are made from glass. A 54l (~14gal) aquarium was integrated into the sideboard as digging area (pic 2).
The four areas are decorated as follows:
A "forest theme" on the top right with cork, hay, and a ceramic mushroom hideout (see pic 3). A "desert theme" on the top right with a mangrove root, an animal "skull" from the aquarium section of the pet shop and a DIY terrarium background (pic 4).
The ground floor left was themed after the "Shire" from Lord of the Rings (pics 5 and 6) and is furnished with several birch hideouts and birch cuts (available from online pet and craft shops). It also contains grown seeds and other play food like millet and flax, the water bottle and hay.
To the right are the digging area (pic 7) and the 20cm (8") RoboWheel by Transoniq. The bedding is wood shavings (use aspen, NOT cedar or pine!) mixed with hay. A cork tunnel is a good starting point for the hamster to dig.
The cage also contains an LED "moonlight" (available in the terra section of pet shops) which can be used to watch the hamster in the evening without disturbing him with white light (pics 8 and 9). Little winter white Mickey seems to enjoy his cage (pics 10, and 11).
